Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Here are some common questions on the Visual-AIDD™ System:

QUESTION: Why in the world would I buy a Visual-AIDD ID Verification System when I can have my cashiers use their own judgment, examine cards carefully, and use sample ID guides, UV lights or magnifying glasses to help them identify underage buyers of alcoholic beverages?
ANSWER: This is the pivotal question so let’s see first what our customers have reported since buying and installing the Visual-AIDD System this past year:
From Dewey Parsons, owner of Downtown Wine and Spirits in the busy city of Somerville, MA that has scores of its young residents attending schools in the Boston area:
“I have had the misfortune of failing a sting operation that cost me not only thousands of dollars in fines and attorney fees, but also put my license in jeopardy. This was the case of a person using a friend’s “look alike” license. All of our employees are TIPS trained and usually diligent. Some of the new fake IDs are good enough to be accepted by police. If that person screws up after using a fake ID in your establishment, guess what? You are liable!
When I was approached by Advanced ID Detection, I saw immediately the advantages as they relate to underage drinking and as a first class concept to reduce it and protect me as well. Now, after installing Visual-AIDD, I’m able to ensure that all IDs presented and accepted from customers in my store are real. The enlargement feature (which takes the drivers license photo and displays it in large format on the monitor) ensures that the ID belongs to the same person presenting the ID at time of purchase.
After five months of operation with Visual-AIDD, I have confiscated over 60 fake IDs and turned away numerous suspected “borrowers”. I am constantly applauded by concerned parents, local law enforcement, and even members of MADD for using this preventive technology. I would not operate without it.”
From Wally Cronin, owner of The Wine Press in Brookline, MA which is within five miles of more than 250,000 underage high school and college students:
“Stings are sometimes relentless. We’ve had police outside our store weekends checking every person coming out of the store. Good thing we were very strict. One store I know got nailed and closed down for ten days. That’s enough for a small store to go out of business. You’ve lost revenue and you need that revenue to pay your bills --- a real double whammy.
Carefully checking IDs is so fundamental to this business. It’s such a relief when you get a system like this that really works because, otherwise, you go to sleep sweating. There are lots of machines out there that are just lousy; the kids find out how to beat them. I know owners that told me they bought some machines and ended up throwing them away because they were useless. The Visual-AIDD System is different because it is so easy to operate but very sophisticated in its checking. Now it has changed everything in my store. Adopting this technology, in my opinion, is a no-brainer.
Visual-AIDD has also made it so much easier to orient and train new employees that work the register. It takes the burden off them on whether to accept an ID or not.
Anyone can afford the price of these if one looks at the long term benefits. We know that stings are not going away. Any smart owner is going to conclude that Visual-AIDD takes the weight off you quite a bit. It saves you sleep, and sleep is worth something!”
From Robert Kirsch, owner of Kirsch Liquors in Worcester, MA:
The Visual-AIDD has certainly helped us. I have had probably 50 fake IDs that we caught using this system. And, importantly, the word starts getting around: don’t go into Kirsch Liquors because they’ve got this pretty fancy system. They don’t actually see the system because I have it behind the counter; but I do have the warning stickers on the outside door. It’s easy and user friendly. My cashiers took to it very quickly and they use it.”
From Kevin Prosper, owner of Bridgewater Liquors in Bridgewater, MA:
“I am so glad I have the Advanced ID Detection Visual-AIDD System. It has made me sleep easier. This catches the hardest of the fake IDs; in fact, we have 23 fake IDs so far and its only been four months since we installed it. This is the best system on the market, no doubt.
From Todd Greamo, owner of Mass Liquors in Worcester, MA which has a dozen colleges and universities within a 15 minute drive:
“We have the Visual-AIDD System on all three of our registers. This is the first ID software where I trust the software more than I do myself. I now have faith in our machines because they have proven that they work. It makes it easier to refuse the customer who presents a questionable ID --- I just tell them politely: ‘If my scanner won’t pass it, I cannot accept it’.
Before Visual-AIDD, I would never leave the store on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night --- not even for ten minutes! Now I’ll still be here but I’ll go grab dinner for an hour and a half because I know that my crew all know how to use the Visual-AIDD machine and how to double check a license. If it fails some of the checks of the ID, the machine summarizes its conclusion and makes the call for them. That’s awesome.”
QUESTION: Okay, so you have some customers who like your system, but how many systems are out there and how many have stopped using them?
ANSWER: After being used by the Federal Government to protect high security installations and personnel in the wake of September 11, 2001 terrorism, the core Visual-AIDD technology (software and hardware) was approved recently for use in protecting private sector businesses being dogged by false IDs and fake state drivers licenses. Since launching this private sector solution in early 2010, Advanced ID Detection has sold and installed almost 100 systems beginning in our own Massachusetts backyard, which has a disproportionate share of America’s universities and colleges. The Boston area alone has more than 300,000 college students. To date, no systems have been returned by an Advanced ID Detection customer; in fact, they have been recommending the system to other establishments. The system has established a reputation as one that actually works!
The story had gotten even better in early 2011 as the Visual-AIDD system was recently used to test fake drivers licenses shipped to the Boston area from China for use by underage students seeking to buy alcohol illegally. Although seemingly okay to the naked eye, these Chinese-fabricated IDs failed when inserted into the AIDD-150 scanner. In fact, it detected as fake each and every one of the licenses for which U.S. college students had shelled out thousands of dollars for several dozen IDs. It is fair to say that the false ID industry has now met its match.
QUESTION: How is the Visual-AIDD system different from other ID Checking systems?
ANSWER: To begin with, those who make a very good living fabricating and selling fake IDs at inflated prices can and do buy the same ID creation hardware and software, thermal card printers and color print ribbons used to personalize drivers licenses and other IDs. So, the bad guys have the same technology as our federal, state, and local authorities. The criminals also have in recent years adapted to the enhanced security overlays and sophisticated card features used by state motor Vehicle bureaus so that, to the naked eye of the retail liquor sales clerk, many fake IDs look entirely acceptable. This is true even when the cashier has on hand a booklet or magnifying glass and light source to help identify phony drivers licenses.
In addition, the phony card makers can encode magnetic stripes and print 2D barcodes that are standard elements of most modern drivers licenses and are readable in scanners for data collection or identification purposes. Not surprisingly, as U.S. authorities have gotten more security conscious in designing and issuing their State drivers licenses and other IDs, international criminals who monopolize this illicit business have ratcheted up their own capabilities as well.
Against the technical security challenge from motivated criminal organizations, the older “age verification systems” are overmatched and cannot do the job. Frankly, most of the time they leave a retail store owner feeling secure when in fact the only thing the simple age-calculating device has done is provide backstopping for an entirely false ID … and placed the retail owner’s business at risk!
Yes, the Visual-AIDD system catches the newer high tech fake IDs from China (idchief, etc.) that are so popular among college students (even with their realistic holograms, UV, and scannable barcodes and mag stripes)!
This brings us to the heart of the matter: Advanced ID Detection’s Visual-AIDD System is the only one that can do for the retail liquor store, restaurant, convenience store or social club what needs to be done to weed out underage drinkers before they make a purchase.
Specifically, Visual-AIDD is a huge technological leap over all other systems:
- It reads not only the printed barcode and encoded magnetic stripe data but the printed text as well on the front of the ID. In milliseconds it compares the front-of-ID printed text to the machine readable data contained in the barcode and magnetic stripe. (This feature detects IDs and drivers licenses that have been manually tampered with by the underage person.)
- In milliseconds it captures a full 24 bit (16 million colors), 600 dpi (2.6 Mega pixel) image of both sides of the license as well as an infrared image.
- It pulls out the data for logging purposes and automatically calculates age of the person, expiration date of the document, as well as displaying a large-size photo from the drivers license for comparison to the person presenting the ID. It helps prevent “imposter or look-alike fraud” because the cashier is able to view a 4” x 5” or larger image on the monitor rather than the standard 1” x 1.1/4” photo printed on a regular drivers license. Underage buyers get real skittish when they know the drivers license photo is being seen on a large scale by the cashier who now can detect an impostor so much easier.
- It checks for the presence or absence of critical security features such as microprint, holograms, and visible or infrared patterns.
- Finally, the Visual-AIDD System doesn’t just feed raw data to the sales clerk . What busy cashier coping with a line of checkout customers has the patience, time or discipline to make ID verification decisions that can be very complex and challenging? Anyone who thinks this is not a problem has never been in a liquor store, restaurant, or convenience store on Friday and Saturday night nor has he been at a club on Super Bowl or Daytona 500 weekend. And here is one great virtue in automatic computer-based ID detection: Visual-AIDD never gets tired, never gets hassled, never gets distracted or conned by a bright smile or pretty face. Instead, in 5-7 seconds it does an evaluation and displays on the monitor an immediate assessment on whether the ID is likely to be genuine or a fake.
In summary, when you purchase an ID verification system, you should get what you need and what you pay for; in the case of the Visual-AIDD System, that is precisely what you will get.
QUESTION: That sounds pretty good, but let’s say I’m a bit of a technical geek. Tell me how the Visual-AIDD system really works and does what you describe above.
ANSWER: Well, you asked for it. Without revealing all of our security tricks for detecting and defeating the fake ID industry, the AIDD-150 scanner does a lot of things in the 5-7 seconds before announcing its findings on the monitor.
- First, as mentioned earlier, it captures the presented ID or drivers license on both sides in full color at a 600 dpi resolution. In addition, the magnetic stripe is read, stored, and decoded. Three high resolution images are the result: front and back of the ID scanned in the visible spectrum as well as the front image scanned in Near-Infrared (NIR) which detects the presence of true black or carbon-based ink.
- Using a unique patented process, the ID is classified by comparing the front image and format to known image characteristics of over 2000 ID types in the AIDD Document Library. The ID can be categorized by:
a) Issuing agency (e.g. Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Registry);
b) Type of ID (e.g., Driver’s License, “Under 21 ID”, Learning Permit, Commercial Drivers License, etc.), and
c) Series (e.g., 2010 or 2011).
Because Advanced ID Detection continually updates its Document Library (typically requiring as many as 300 document additions or changes each month), it is unusual that a drivers license or publicly-issued ID is not recognized. When there is no match in the AIDD database, it is classified as “Unknown” and the retail store owner typically refuses to accept it as valid for alcohol purchase.
- When the ID or drivers license is recognized and can be classified by Visual-AIDD, it is analyzed both for content and authenticity. According to the type of ID, the locations of all printed fields are known. Specialized image processing is applied to read any textual information contained therein. If magnetic stripe or barcode data are present, they are read,, decoded and placed into their respective fields. From the stored templates, we can derive highly accurate textual fields representing the data on the ID (e.g. Name, Address, Date of Birth, Expiration, Issue Date, Sex, biometrics such as Height, Weight, Hair/Eye Color, etc.). Mismatches between data derived from printed text,, barcode, or magnetic stripe are easily detected.
- Based on the specific ID type, a wide range of other forensic or CSI-like tests are performed on the ID to check for the presence or absence of known security features on the front, back or NIR images. These includes examining such security devices as microprint, true color integrity, holograms, and the relative position of fields.
- From all this processing the AIDD System arrives at what we call an “AIDD Risk Score” which is represented by a number from 0 (very low risk) to 10 (a highly suspect ID). A risk score higher than a preset threshold (typically 5) generally results in a rejected ID.
- Within 5-7 seconds of inserting the ID, the cashier gets a “decision” when the Visual-AIDD Interface displays a quick overview of the results of the ID testing. It displays on the monitor whether the ID is expired, the age of the person (derived from the date of birth), and a pass/fail indicator (Red X if failed, Green Checkmark if passed). Specific problems with the ID are also displayed. The license photo of the person is extracted and displayed in an enlarged format on the monitor so the cashier can make an easy visual comparison of the ID photo and the presenter standing right in front of him. In short, an automatic check of an ID for content and authenticity takes place in a few seconds. Ironically, rather than slowing things down the Visual-AIDD System can save checkout time because there is less room for confusion, for sorting ID-related issues out, or for squabbling with the potential underage would be purchaser.
QUESION: What kinds of IDs does the Visual-AIDD system read?
ANSWER: The AIDD Document Library includes virtually all drivers licenses and other ID documents used for public purposes here in North America (U.S., Canada, and Mexico).
- The Visual-AIDD System can deal with pretty much all North American and Government-issued ID cards. At any time, there are multiple generations of each State’s drivers license in circulation which remain valid until reaching their individual expiration date --- even though a State no longer issues IDs in that format.
- In addition to the basic Operator Drivers License, state authorities issue other variations such as Under 21 Licenses, Commercial or Chauffeur Drivers Licenses, Learners Permits, and even ID Cards not used for driving. Each of these documents may have a slightly different format in terms of printing style and data field print location, logos, photo placement, coloration and security features.
- So many varieties are in circulation that no one can know them all --- even with the aid of an annual booklet of State drivers licenses that is most probably out of date before it is printed -- since changes are made every month of the year across North America.
- The Visual-AIDD System has been “trained” in many hundreds of ID and drivers license formats and security features including: US Military IDs, Alien Registration or “Green” Cards, Border Crossing Cards, U.S. Passport Cards, Mexican “Matricula” Cards issued by Mexican Consulates here in the States, and many more.
- Each month, AIDD updates its retail customer software to include hundreds of updates, additions, and changes to the its ID Document Library so that AIDD customers are truly the best informed people in the county --- so much so that state and local law enforcement increasingly drop by AIDD customer locations to check out questionable IDs or drivers licenses. This, we are told, strengthens the relationship between Visual-AIDD users and local law enforcement personnel, who appreciate that the retail store, restaurant or club has made a strong effort to comply with the underage drinking laws. Indirectly, it enhances security of retail alcohol establishments and personnel by encouraging supportive local law enforcement officers to drop by on a friendly versus an adversarial basis. Why, as one of our customers reports above, even the local MADD people like it!
QUESTION: What about foreign licenses?
ANSWER: The Visual-AIDD System covers North American licenses and IDs, including State- or Province-issued IDs from the US, Canada, and Mexico and Central America (e.g. Guatemala). We offer optional international coverage of most common foreign driver’s licenses, IDs, voter cards, consular cards, etc. In fact, the same ID engine technology used in Visual-AIDD is used around the world at international borders, airports, car rental locations, as well as government offices to check passports, as well as local licenses and IDs. It is really a matter of properly training the system on the new documents and hoping that the foreign issuing authority has done its job properly. In most instances, establishments elect not to accept foreign drivers licenses and IDs for the sale of alcohol because they can’t be sure of the authenticity of the license and widespread fraud that surrounds such licenses. Visual-AIDD can increase your confidence level quite a bit!
QUESTION: Did you say Passports too?
ANSWER: Yes, the Visual-AIDD System can read U.S. Passport Cards in the drivers license or “ID-1” size. (These Government-issued cards are used for traveling within the Western Hemisphere.) Full-sized U.S. Passports booklets obviously cannot be used in the AIDD-150 card scanner. However, we do offer a Passport Reader (the AIDD-400) that reads both Passports and card-sized IDs. The AIDD-400 operates very much like a small copy machines, with passport or ID placed on a glass plate. The reader senses when a document is placed there and then proceeds to take pictures of the document utilizing several light sources. Both the AIDD-400 and AIDD-150 could be connected to and used on the same PC to handle both types of ID documents.
QUESTION: Can the Visual-AIDD System be trained to read other types of ID cards?
ANSWER: If you have a requirement to be able to read a specialized card --- perhaps an employee ID card for a large corporation, a health insurance card, a store membership card, etc., we can train our system to read the card, extract the data, and authenticate it. We can also assist in recommending Visual-AIDD readable security features as well as U.S. card manufacturers who provide such cards to the most sensitive Government agencies.
QUESTION: Why do monthly updates?
ANSWER: This all has to do with protecting our customers and professionally offering a solution that is not outdated and behind the power curve. After all, we are up against the international criminal networks that exploit false IDs and ID theft, and have proven to be quite adaptable.
- To begin with, US states as a group are continually updating their license properties at random times and do so over any given period according to their purchasing cycle or change in requirements. State and law enforcement authorities know that failure to update an ID checking system leaves it vulnerable to an explosion of fake licenses.
- Also, the cycle of new ID issuance is becoming shorter these days as states work to come into better compliance with the Real-ID Act enacted after 9/11. This Act called for designing IDs and drivers licenses with a greater number of security features to help foil the creation and use of fake IDs. Monthly updates are required to stay ahead of the fake ID industry and to incorporate into AIDD’s Document Library new license formats and security enhancements.
- As we make adjustments to our AIDD User Interface based on customer and user suggestions and feedback, we assure that all customers benefit from these new capabilities as soon as possible.
- We supply updates on a CD with our user-friendly menu-based installation program. The update process itself can be done in a few minutes. For users with systems lacking a CD drive, we supply an external USB-based CD drive. Most of our systems are on computers NOT connected to the internet.
- Finally, monthly updates often include tutorials, updated user guides, helpful hints on using the system, information on what new State IDs have been issued, and new fake IDs to be aware of.
QUESTION: What maintenance is required on the AIDD-150 Reader?
ANSWER: The AIDD-150 scanner is robust and requires only simple periodic maintenance that takes a minute or two. Drivers licenses get dirty or may have hand cream, grime and oils that transfer to the ID card. Foreign material builds up on the rubberized rollers that pull the card in and out of the device; this may cause the card to slip and result in a distorted image. The solution is simple enough: we recommend cleaning the scanning surface, magnetic stripe head, and rollers with an inexpensive isopropyl alcohol pad after several hundred scans. Such alcohol pads are available at most retail pharmacies in packs of 100 for undert $3). Pictorial cleaning instructions are included in the system documentation.
For a reminder, the Visual-AIDD System tracks how many scans have been done and alerts you after a preset number of scans that you select in the system options. The cumulative number of scans as well as the number of scans since the last cleaning are viewable on Help Page. After cleaning the device, one clicks the “Cleaned” button on the Help Screen to reset the cleaning counter.
QUESTION: How about a person using someone else's ID?
ANSWER: Imposter fraud is a big problem. It is not uncommon for someone underage to use the real ID of someone else who is older that may look similar (possibly even an older brother or sister). The Visual-AIDD system helps to combat this type of deception by allowing for a full screen view of the photo from the ID. In addition, the biometric information that is available from the license (height, weight, eye / hair color) is displayed. This helps to detect situations where there is an obvious mismatch between the presenter and the ID. In addition, the system provides some standard questions (with answers) that could be asked of the presenter to help ascertain if they are who they say they are. Other standard ID procedures can also be employed such as asking for other forms of identification or having them write their signature and comparing it to the signature on the ID.
We also NOW offer tools to perform easy facial comparison
QUESTION: Sounds good so far but is there any way to get a discount on the Visual-AIDD System?
ANSWER: Advanced ID Detection offers a discount to establishments that are members of certain trade groups. For example, in Massachusetts, discounts are offered to members of the Mass Package Store Association or the Massachusetts Restaurant Association. The use of an advanced ID checking system such as Visual-AIDD may also qualify your establishment for a significant discount on liquor liability insurance. This insurance discount would typically be extended every year and could effectively provide a large discount on the purchase of the system and updates. For example, in Massachusetts, Hospitality Mutual Insurance Company (www.hmic.com) offers such a discount to its customers since they have recognized the tremendous value of using the Visual-AIDD System in risk reduction.
QUESTION: Is there a way to keep a log to prove we checked the ID?
ANSWER: Customers can optionally elect to store a log of ID transactions. In addition, they can optionally elect to temporarily store images of the ID, an extracted photo of the presenter, and the results of the ID check process. By default, this information is stored fully encrypted. Such data is stored indexed by date, time, type of ID, and risk score. This makes it relatively easy to locate a particular record or records if the information was needed relative to a specific incident. The data can be automatically purged after a user settable amount of time. This feature allows a manager with password access to go back to retrieve specific information in the event proof is needed that a customer’s ID was checked.
QUESTION: Is there a way to tell if a person has been banned from my establishment?
ANSWER: The Visual-AIDD system allows customers to formulate a list of “banned” persons for a given establishment. When an ID is scanned, this list can optionally be checked to see if there is a person with the same name and birth date. If so, a warning message will appear alerting the bouncer or cashier to the situation. Users can edit the “banned” list with a standard text editor or add it directly from Visual-AIDD.
QUESTION: What kind of a computer do I need to run Visual-AIDD?
ANSWER: The Visual-AIDD system is designed to run under the Microsoft Windows-based operating system (Windows XP, Vista, or Win7). The time it takes to analyze an ID is very dependent on the speed of the computer and the memory available. We recommend at least a dual core processor and 1 GB of memory. If your computer is less than 2 years old it is likely to be fast enough. Many of our users elect to run Visual-AIDD on a dedicated laptop or a small desktop system (particularly for cases where it may be shared between several registers). Visual-AIDD can also be configured to pop up on the screen in a small window showing the basic analysis of a license and then disappear after a set time or upon a click from the user.
QUESTION: How much detail can I see on an ID with the Visual-AIDD System?
ANSWER: The Visual-AIDD system makes it very easy to take a closer look at an ID. It’s much easier than trying to visually examine tiny details on a small license in perhaps bad lighting conditions. The Visual-AIDD main display shows views of the front and back of the license as well as an IR image of the front side. It also shows an extracted larger image of the photo from the ID. The AIDD-150 reader captures fine detail at 600 dots per inch! In addition, there are images of the portion of the ID where the expiration date and date of birth are displayed. Clicking on any of these images will result in a full screen display of that image. While in the full screen display, a magnified window version is available so that you can zoom into any portion of the image for a closer look. Clicking again on the full screen display will bring you back to the main screen. This makes it very simple and quick to check out ID details.
QUESTION: Is Visual-AIDD connected to any outside databases?
ANSWER: The Visual-AIDD system is not connected to an outside database. It relies totally on its local built in library of document characteristics. Sometimes customers might raise the concern that they are being checked against some government database (for whatever reason – unpaid parking tickets, etc.), but the purpose of the system is really just to answer four key questions
(1) the person’s age,
(2) if their ID is not expired,
(3) if it is not a fake, and
(4) whether the presenter is indeed the person depicted on the ID.
The Visual-AIDD system is really just an aid to help you answer these four critical questions that you may be required by law to check before making a sale of alcohol or other controlled product. Should your application require checking against an external database or posting of the data to an external system please contact us.
QUESTION: How do I get one of these Visual-AIDD Systems?
ANSWER: Just give us a call at 800-209-5040 and select X1 for sales. We can arrange a live demo at your establishment or even over the internet.
